Tråante 2017 – Celebration of the Sami People

From 5 to 12 February 2017 several cultural and political events take place in Trondheim to celebrate the 100 years anniversary of the first congress of the Sami people. The celebratory gathering is called Tråante, which is the South Sami name for Trondheim.

Though held in Norway, this is also a celebration for the Sami people from Sweden, Finland and Russia. The object of the events held during the week is to increase knowledge and understanding of the Sami culture and their history, focusing on democracy, justice and diversity.

HM King Harald, Prime Minister Erna Solberg and other members of the Norwegian government will attend events during the celebrations. Securing the rights of indigenous peoples is an important part of the work conducted by the United Nations, and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), will also be in attendance at Tråante 2017.
