So far, 35 people have been killed and 55 000 have been evacuated. Altogether, some 300 000 people have probably been affected by the worst storms in El Salvador for 50 years.
“The situation is serious, but the authorities have acted swiftly. When floods hit, it is always the weakest members of society who suffer most. People who have been driven away from their homes need food, water and shelter,” commented Minister of the Environment and International Development Erik Solheim.
Roberto Lorenzana, Vice President of El Salvador’s Parliament, said that Norway’s contribution is a sign of the Norwegian people’s solidarity and friendship with his country. He said that the authorities are now putting considerable effort into reaching those who are most severely affected, and into carrying out this vital work in consultation with the people of El Salvador. He added that El Salvador is deeply grateful for Norway’s important contribution.
