Universalisation workshop held in Geneva
Last updated: 05.06.2014 //
As one of the Coordinators on Universalization of the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM), the Norwegian Mission hosted a workshop on May 27 in Arabic, focusing on the promotion of the Convention among Arabic States.
The purpose of the workshops was to gather Arabic States, and to support their efforts towards ratifying the Convention. The workshops had a particular focus on how States can go about developing national legislation to implement the Convention, and featured substantive presentations by the ICRC and the Cluster Munition Coalition (CMC) and the informal format facilitated an open and frank discussion.
The workshop was held at the Permanent Mission of Norway under the chairmanship of Lebanon. Norway’s opening statement in Arabic emphasized the importance of universalizing the Convention, and the wide range of resources and assistance that are available for States that are interested in joining the treaty. Norway also stated that the workshops reflected the strong spirit of partnership that has characterized the Convention on Cluster Munitions, as well as “our desire to extend a helping hand to any State that is interested in becoming Party to the CCM, and in addressing the human suffering caused by cluster munitions. All the presentations delivered during the workshop are available here.
