The Ambassador of the Norwegian delegation in Geneva, Steffen Kongstad, opened the event and greeted about 150 attendees. Participants were purchasers in the United Nations, technical personnel and experts from several humanitarian organizations.
The ambassador addressed the importance of innovation within support systems like Norwegian Emergency Preparedness System (NOREPS):
In line with developments in the humanitarian community at large, support systems must also be under continuous development and adaptation in accordance with operational needs in the field. NOREPS is well positioned for this, as the network is administered by Innovation Norway, which as a public entity is mandated to offer services and financing to boost innovation in enterprises and industry. Hence, the system fosters product development, new ideas, innovations and sustainable solutions, responding to the demands of the UN and the humanitarian agencies.
UN, preparedness and emergency market represents a significant market for its excellent products and solutions. UN alone bought in 2010 goods and services of 14.5 billion dollars. Innovation Norway is working actively so that several Norwegian companies with their innovative and sustainable products and services will find their way to this market.
