Disarmament

The disarmament team at the Permanent Mission of Norway in Geneva works to support Norway’s objective to make an active contribution to processes of international disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destructions, in relevant multilateral forums. Particular emphasis is put on humanitarian disarmament, which place the humanitarian and developmental consequences of the use of weapons at the forefront. The Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) and the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (MBC) are important instruments in this regard. Norway played an active role in the development of both conventions, and the work with these conventions is a high priority at the Mission. The Mission has also worked closely with Oslo in preparing the conference on Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons, which took place in Oslo 4-5 March 2013. In addition, the Mission follows other disarmament processes and forums that take place in Geneva, including amongst others the Conference on Disarmament (CD), the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW), the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC).
