Norway's humanitarian policy document

The new Norwegian Humanitarian Policy paper was launched by Foreign Minster Støre on  15 September 2008 and is now available in English.

Our humanitarian engagement is part of a coherent foreign and development policy that aims to promote peace and sustainable development. We are committed to meeting these challenges through a variety of measures that are as coordinated as possible. Norway as a humanitarian policy actor and a financial donor will face many complex challenges in the years ahead. The policy paper seeks to outline approaches to addressing them while upholding core humanitarian principles and values. In cooperation with others, Norway will contribute to:

  • ensuring that people in need receive the necessary protection and assistance
finance humanitarian assistance based on the principles of humanity, impartiality and neutrality
  • equipping the international community to meet future global humanitarian challenges
  • initiating swift recovery of communities after crises.
