Trade growth projections for 2014 are much improved, hovering somewhere between 4.0% and 4.5% "but this is still below the historical average since 1990 of 5.5%", said WTO Director-General at the presentation of the global trade-monitoring report Monday 17 February.
Director-General Azevedo also noted that trade in goods expanded by less than 2.5% in 2013.
He also pointed out that 407 new trade-restrictive measures were reported during the review, and that this is up from 308 in the previous year.
He also stressed the point that it is our collective responsibility to address the negative effects caused by these increasing trade restrictions, and that the Trade Facilitations Agreement is even more timely and important against this back-drop.
